This is the IC diary of Sianan Albina Murdoch, 7th year Ravenclaw (School year 1981-82) The entries within are for OOC enjoyment, unless you actually dare to steal it IC.

BIO:

Somewhere in the ancient family history of the Murdochs, there was a Dark Wizard. Or a dragon-slayer. Possibly both. Maybe it was one person that did both things. Truth to tell, no one really knows for sure any more, and the modern-day bearers of the Murdoch name have plenty of other things to worry about than something that happened in the Middle Ages.

Gareth Murdoch was an only child, and much to his parents' dismay his seven years at Hogwarts resulted in nothing (his NEWT scores were apparently so embarrassing that the school saved his parents the torture of having to see them, instead sending a letter advising them to save themselves the bother of letting him practice magic). His father, Aneiron Murdoch, was so furious he Disapparated on the spot and hasn't been heard from since. Despite being a disappointment to his family, his one bright spot at school had been his best friend, Archibald Evans, a Pure-Blood wizard who inherited his family's cauldron business and asked Gareth to come run it with him, which began their start as 'respectable' adults. Archie married the girl he'd fallen in love with at Hogwarts, a Muggle-born lass from Scotland whose sister, Vanora, became Gareth's wife on January 1, 1960.

Their son was born almost exactly a year later, on January 6, 1961, and a daughter followed three years later. When Sianan was born, on July 21, 1964, there were two Murdoch children in the same generation for the first time in over a century (due to the paranoid nature of the family, along with a tendency to produce only boys, the last Murdoch to have more than one child was in 1752, and they were twins), and Dylis actually found herself smiling at the thought that she might have two grandchildren attending Hogwarts (and, hopefully, doing much better than their father).

When Sianan was two and her brother five, the family relocated to Penderyn, Wales, so that their father was closer to the business. Thus the children were introduced to potion-making, as the Evans' household was full of cauldrons made for various purposes, and their aunt and uncle actually used them. Sianan's magic first manifested at the age of five, although her family remains unaware of this fact, thinking that it happened later on in her life. Upset that no one would play with her, shortly after her brother's magical talent made itself known so spectacularly, she got hold of her father's wand for a bit of make-believe play. She went from conducting an 'orchestra' to imagining she was drawing with it, and this is when the trouble began: having forgotten that she was 'playing' instead of drawing, Sianan began chewing on the tip of the wand as one would a pencil. After a moment, she got the funniest taste in her mouth, and upon opening it, she realized that the taste was actually copper! For a full minute, knuts fell from her mouth, and afraid that someone would notice, she quickly scooped them up and put them in her pocket, transferring them later to a small pouch, where they remain to this day, generally in the bottom of her school trunk. She is afraid to use them, for having to answer how she got them.

When Payton left for Hogwarts, Sianan was given a kitten by her parents, who she insisted on naming Mr. Cuddles in spite of the fact that the feline was, in fact, female. Shortly thereafter, she was playing with a toy cauldron she'd gotten for her birthday, mixing the 'ingredients' together, and because it was only play, she sampled her brew afterward. Her mother found her some minutes later, asleep in the middle of the day, and it was discovered that she'd somehow concocted a true sleeping potion from the inert ingredients. This was her first 'official' use of magic, and it was celebrated as soon as the potion's effects wore off, ensuring that the girl's interest in potions would last for years to come. During Payton's first three years of school, Sianan did as much research as a child her age was permitted, especially during the rare visits to Castle Murdoch, where she learned that the affinity for potions was something that ran through the family's bloodline.

The August after her eleventh birthday, a letter arrived from Hogwarts for Sianan, confirming what everyone already knew, that she would be joining her brother at the school. While her brother sat with his friends, Sianan found a compartment of her own with some other brand-new Hogwarts students, among them Celeste Huntington, with whom she soon became friends. At the Sorting, the Hat very nearly put her in her grandfather's old House, but decided that she took after her grandmother more, and announced that she was a Ravenclaw. The rest of the feast proceeded without incident up until the very end, at which point she and her brother were called into Dumbledore's office. On their way home from the train station, Gareth and Vanora Murdoch were in a traffic accident cause by a dark wizard attack. Their mother had died, and Gareth was badly injured, and what should have been one of the happiest days in Sianan's life was forever marred by tragedy.

She had the support of her brother to see her through that time, as well as the friends that she'd made (and, of course, Cuddles), and it wasn't long before she was nearly back to her old self, and ready to take on life at Hogwarts. It was no surprise to anyone that she excelled at Potions, given the family history and her brother's already-proven aptitude for the class, and while it took her most of first year to really begin applying herself, she was getting high marks in Defense by the beginning of her second year. While she doesn't really have any classes that she does poorly in, Astronomy and History of magic hold no real interest for her, and she skates by on average grades in those classes. In her third year, she selected Muggle Studies and Divination for her electives, doing better in the former due to her own mother having been a Muggle.
